Story / Content Writer

Full-time writer, researcher, and investigative journalist, the Story/Content Writer position at Reach Beyond works as part of the Creative Services team to identify, develop, and deliver stories that tell how God is working around the world with Reach Beyond. The writer will support our publishing and marketing efforts across all media channels, including mobilization and donor communication.

Location: Colorado Springs-Preferable
Hours per week: 40 (full-time)
Supervisor: Director of Marketing and Communications
Reporting Staff Members: None

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Seek out story leads that communicate how God is working at Reach Beyond as we go about our mission of declaring and demonstrating Jesus Christ through media, healthcare, and community development.
  • Collect information from internal conversations, staff presentations, social media posts, blogs, prayer letters, reports, and additional channels used by ministry leaders, staff, and missionaries.
  • Organize story leads so they are easily searched and recalled when needed.
  • Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications to identify stories that directly reflect the mission/vision of the ministry.
  • Develop story leads into written, compelling content by researching, interviewing, and writing for a variety of channels. This may include, but not limited to, magazine articles, web content, emails, blogs, social media posts, and other Development, Mobilization, and Communications departmental collateral.
  • Provide input into the Voice+Hands magazine editorial calendar and write stories and other content as assigned.
  • Oversees the writing, on behalf of leadership, for both internal and external audiences. Ensures all communications are on brand, proofread and edited for security, accuracy and professionalism.
  • Edit all final content (including guest writers) to ensure it is grammatically and stylistically correct, on brand, truthful and protects the ministry from global security concerns.
  • Collect and write praise and prayer requests from around the ministry for the monthly PrayerWorld.
  • Work with the Website and Creative Asset Manager to update content on the website. Work with the Team Director to determine priority stories to push out across all platforms.
  • Provide story updates to the Development Team as needed for donor and foundation communications.
  • Work with the Development Team on content for quarterly Impact Reports and fundraising appeals, both in print and electronic format.
  • Maintain knowledge of Reach Beyond brand and style guidelines, as well as current communications trends for presenting content to supporters and general audiences.
  • Serve as an integral part of the Creative Services team, attending team meetings, providing input into strategy, communicating project updates and needs, and assisting team members as required.
  • Participates in prayer times and chapel/staff meetings.
  • Willing and committed to hold to the policies described in all manuals.

Requirements:
  • Passionate about global missions and reaching the unreached for Jesus
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English or comparable
  • Proven talent and ability to write captivating and effective stories for a variety of audiences and formats (both short-form and long-form)
  • Good listener: ability to boil down a lot of content into shorter, compelling stories
  • Proven communication skills, in-person, over the phone and email
  • Social media savvy with a good fundamental grasp of SEO writing best practices
  • Proven relationship skills, able to engage with different personality types and earn trust
  • Copy editing expertise
  • Ability to balance several projects at once and easily recall details
  • Creative, attention to detail, deadline-oriented, collaborative, flexible
  • Technology savvy, including Microsoft 365 (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, One Drive)
  • Experience writing for a Christian audience
Required Certifications:
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide required documents.
