2020 could be classified for many as a year of trials. For those who are dealing with family challenges such as a child’s illness or marital separation, the global pandemic seems secondary. How can any of us find joy in such circumstances?

For Anum*, one of our listeners in Togo in West Africa, the challenges of this year have been growing for too long.

Earlier this year, Anum’s wife left their family and turned to witchcraft. Shortly after, his child fell ill. Anum’s child would cry through the night, and medical intervention wasn’t helping. Running out of hope, Anum turned somewhere unexpected: his radio.

He traveled immediately to the radio station to have a conversation with the broadcasters – a pastor and his wife – and his life was changed.

The pastor and his wife prayed with Anum, and his child experienced immediate healing. Anum chose to become a follower of Christ that very day. The pastor and his wife continued to disciple Anum and joined him in praying for his wife. Miraculously, she abandoned her life of witchcraft, returned to their family, and sought forgiveness. They attended church together for the first time this past fall. 

In Psalm 5:11, we are urged to put our refuge in God and to sing for joy. Despite struggles that at times seem insurmountable, Anum and others all over the world are hearing about God’s love for them every day and finding a reason for joy.
