HCJB World Radio-Australia Adds Broadcasts in 7 Languages

HCJB World Radio-Australia is now transmitting programming in 12 different languages into India from its shortwave transmitter site in Kununurra, Australia, after seven languages -- Bangla, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telegu, Marwari, Marathi and Santhali -- were added on Aug. 28.

SIL International's Ethnologue indicates that a total of 308 million people speak these seven languages in India alone, greatly increasing the station's potential audience. Many of these languages are also spoken in neighboring countries within the region, bringing the total even higher.

The seven new languages are in addition to broadcasts previously started in English, Urdu, Hindi, Nepali and Chattisgarhi from the same Kununurra transmitter site. Shortwave broadcasts aimed at other areas go out in Indonesian, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Asia Pacific Director Dennis Adams said much of the momentum behind putting these programs on the air came from Christopher and Dolly Kirubakaran, HCJB World Radio's co-directors for India stationed in New Delhi.

The majority of these programs are the result of partnerships with various groups ministering within India and are typically recorded in HCJB World Radio's New Delhi studios. (HCJB World Radio)
