It's another example of a major impact for the cause of Christ. As a result of their dedicated labors, Richard and Kathy McDonald were recognized in early March with the International Impact Award at the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) convention in Nashville, Tenn.
Since 1991 Radio Kahuzi has been broadcasting the gospel to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo via FM and low-power shortwave. The FM signal can be heard by 250,000 people in Bukavu, the capital, while the ministry's low-power shortwave station has a potential audience of 10 million, including neighboring countries such as Uganda and Tanzania. The ministry has also formed more than 200 listeners' clubs with 8,000 members.
The McDonalds followed the example of Kathy's parents who served in that same nation for many years. Despite numerous challenges, they have remained faithful to the call of God.
HCJB Global partnered with the McDonalds in 1991 to provide the original FM transmitter. Then Galcom International assisted, distributing more than 15,000 fixed-tuned, solar-powered Go-Ye radios to remote villages to enhance the ministry. In recent years text-messaging via cell phone and livestreaming via satellite have been added.
The International Impact Award is presented to a U.S.-based NRB member having a global impact for the cause of Christ through electronic media.
