Partnerships Boost Distribution of Thousands of Radios in Africa and Beyond

July 15, 2011

(July 15, 2011 - by Marla Bender) Listeners of Christian radio in America will soon be powerfully linked to listeners of Christian radio in Africa through a remarkable chain of partnerships.

Last fall HCJB Global partnered with Moody Radio to raise funds for 5,000 SonSet® radios to be distributed by staff members at five of the mission's partner stations in Ghana, West Africa.

Moody Radio made the need known, and listeners responded so generously that the original goal was quickly surpassed. Enough funds came in to buy an additional 2,000 of the solar-powered, fixed-tuned radios-1,000 for two partner stations in Sierra Leone and 1,000 for a partner in Burkina Faso.

As a result, at least 7,000 more people will soon become listeners of local Christian radio stations. Because it is common in Africa for extended family and friends to gather around and listen to a single radio, that number is expected to increase dramatically.

Each of those 7,000 radios was programmed, tested, and repackaged for shipment at the HCJB Global Technology Center. Hundreds of man-hours were needed for the task, so another partnership was forged.

From January to April, more than 180 volunteers from 15 of HCJB Global's supporting churches traveled to the Technology Center to help the staff process the radios and prepare the sets for shipment. Of the 5,000 designated for Ghana, 1,000 have already arrived and been released from customs. If all goes well, the remaining 4,000 will soon follow.

In addition, 2,500 radios were shipped directly from the manufacturer to partner ministries in the Asia Pacific Region, including 1,000 to Indonesia, 1,000 to Thailand and 500 to Nepal.

God is linking Christian radio listeners in the United States to listeners in Africa and Asia through this committed chain of partnerships. The gospel is being heard in new places because of the combined efforts of every link in the chain.
