Russian Media Conference Draws Representatives of 10 Radio Ministries

June 15, 2012

(June 15, 2012 - by Ed Giesbrecht) How can a Christian broadcaster develop content that is relevant to a listening audience without compromising the truth of Scripture? That difficult question was at the heart of the discussions by a group of Christian broadcasters gathered at a local seminary in May.

David, director of HCJB Global's Europe/Eurasia Region, explained that local churches want to be involved in the media, but they're are unsure of how to do that well, often resulting in difficult relationships. But the goal of all was to see fruit that glorifies Christ and results in developing mature believers.

A total of 21 participants came from cities across the country. All are actively serving in Christian radio studios or stations and represent 10 different ministries. The Russian group is called the Commonwealth of Christian Broadcasters in Russia.

Local businessman Konstantin provided the opening devotional thoughts, encouraging the HCJB Global partners in their personal walk with God as a basis for all they do in ministry.

Different participants shared their work experiences, their vision for ministry and their view of the Christian mass media scene in contemporary Russia. Questions for discussion included: How can we effectively reach people with the gospel of Christ? What formats are most effective on the radio and on the Internet? How do you engage people who are far from God? How can these ministries be sustained financially and serve as an extension of the local church?

One of the main presenters with valuable insights was Steven Perry from the U.K. He is the Internet radio director of Access Radio: The Soundtrack to Your Life, a ministry with 15,000 listeners.

Another presenter was Sture from the HCJB Global-Sweden World Office. "He gave very professional suggestions on studio construction and acoustic treatment," said David. "This was particularly encouraging for many who work with very basic studios."

The event was a follow-up to a conference conducted in 2006, designed for encouragement, instruction and finding local answers to local challenges with a little outside help as needed.

"May God use these sorts of gatherings to develop His people and His ministries to speak truth to this generation," David said.
