Club Stories

FROM A LOCAL CLUB

Chi* is in her mid-twenties and lives in SE Asia. Her voice is gentle but carries a passion and joy that cannot be quelled. She speaks proudly in English, which she has been learning for two years through a conversation club run in her local area.

She commented: “Two years ago, I joined an English Club that was held by Christians. Every week I saw people come to help these young adults who really want to learn like me. They show us the way to improve our English. And besides that, they get to know about each other and we build relationships.”

Chi, like many others her age, is excited by what her future may hold. For her, English is a passport towards new opportunities such as travel, education, and a growing career. Share English is designed for young millennials just like Chi who are given the freedom to discuss Christian ideas in a safe setting.

Chi explains: “At that time, I got curious about Christ and how Christians can live their lives so peacefully and how they can care for the people like that. They start to share with me about Christ. I asked one of my friends to pray for me and I gave my heart and my life to Christ last year!”

Seeing Chi’s face light up as she talks about the gift of salvation is remarkable. She commented, “I have been baptized for one year. I think if it has worked with me, it will also work with the other people. So, I’m happy to be a part of Share English and to be the little light for people around.”

Chi has since shared the Good News with other members of her family who have also become Christians.

FROM AN ONLINE CLUB

Claire* is a conversation club leader who meets online with learners, helping grow their conversational English.  Aisha*, a Hindu, is one of her club members. She wanted to improve her language skills, but God had a lot more in store for her.

Claire writes, “I felt I knew Aisha pretty well but because all the online calls are audio, we do have a disadvantage of not being able to ‘see’ each other.

“In July, I decided to ask the group a question about taking risks and Aisha decided to tell us something about herself that we couldn't possibly have known except by ‘seeing her’.

“She began to share that she had had a problem with her leg for the past 20 years. Doctors had told Aisha that she would have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair as they could do nothing for her.

“She is a very humble lady but has exceptional determination, so she had decided that she would not use a wheelchair. Now she walked with a limp, a stick and had special orthopedic shoes. Once Aisha had told her story, I asked if I could pray for her right then. I did so quite simply and then we continued on with our discussion.

“The next week I asked Aisha how she was, expecting her to reply with an unassuming ‘fine’, but instead she said she had had the best week ever! She no longer had any pain when she put her foot down on the ground.

“I asked Aisha if her legs were the same length now and she said they were not, so again, I asked if I could pray. Happy with my offer, I began to pray for Aisha. But when I asked her to stand up and see if anything had changed, she did not want to, so I carried on talking to the club members about the program text.

“In the meantime, unbeknown to the rest of us in the group, she had got up off the sofa and was walking around in her lounge! We suddenly heard shrieks of joy and crying as she realized what had happened. Her husband was so excited too as he had never seen his wife walk like that.”

Claire and Aisha later met privately online and during their time together, Aisha ‘prayed a prayer of salvation.’
