English Conversation Project

English Conversation Club meeting in Quito EcuadorThe English Conversation Project (ECP) helps learners who already have a basic understanding of English, to develop valuable language skills that will empower them in everyday life. For some it will help them into employment and education, for others, it will relieve isolation. For all, it is a welcoming, safe space to learn about different cultures, challenge perceptions, discuss faith and develop diverse friendships.

Learners can interact with the English Conversation Project in three ways:

  • Accessing content themselves through the website, radio, Facebook, YouTube or mobile app.
  • Joining a local club based near where they live.
  • Joining an online club with learners from a similar time zone.

English Conversation Project clubs are based around a weekly audio program written from a Christian perspective. It uses Specialized English (fewer words, slower speed, shorter sentences) which helps learners have greater understanding of topics while being able to form opinions and share their thoughts. From ‘The Five Love Languages' to ‘The Japanese Tea Ceremony’, our positive programming consists of a wide range of topics that are interesting and informative to our audience.

Christian volunteers run local and online clubs, and are trained and supported by the English Conversation Project office team as they minister to English learners. Each week, learners gather together and listen to the audio program while following a written script.
Then, group leaders use prepared conversation starters related to the material shared to develop discussion. These conversation starters provide leaders with natural opportunities to discuss faith and share the message of Jesus, even when a program has no apparent Christian content.

Would you or your church like to be part of the English Conversation Project and share God’s love with English language learners?

To become a part of the English Conversation Project you will need to undergo some basic training with Reach Beyond. This training will guide you through the provided materials and how to set up your club, whether you are an online club leader or a local club leader.

If you’re looking to run a local club, we find that working in partnership with a church is best. This way you can get the full support of your church community through advertising, coordinating and running the club.

Our English Conversation Project leaders love running their clubs!

  • "I have the opportunity to interact with people who do not know our special friend."
  • "I feel like a counsellor, mentor, and a trusted friend. I enjoy it. I hope that I am sowing a seed."

You too could show God’s love to people learning English. You could be a global missionary from your own home!
